Breakfast and a walk through Porto's Baixa
Start with breakfast at a hotel a few minutes from São Bento Station and carry on the morning on foot through the old town: the station's tiles, the view from the Cathedral square and the river at the Ribeira. It is about 1 km, mostly downhill, with steps between the Cathedral and the river.

2. The walk
- São Bento Station. This is the starting point, on Praça de Almeida Garrett. Step into the concourse and take your time with the tile panels on both sides: they show battles, the history of transport and scenes of everyday life. Ten to twenty minutes is enough. 10 to 20 min; Free; No ticket. Good to know: Open every day from 6:30 to 1:00. It is a working station with passengers passing all the time: look at the panels without blocking the way. Official page
- Porto Cathedral (5 min walk). Up Viela da Cadeia and Rua de São Sebastião, climbing, and finally the Escadas da Sé steps. The square in front of the cathedral is the walk's free viewpoint: rooftops, the Luiz I Bridge and Gaia across the river. If you like, visit the Gothic cloister, the museum and the tower, paid at the entrance. 20 to 45 min; Free or paid; Tickets on site. Good to know: Opens at 9:00 every day; closed at Christmas and Easter, with mass at 11:00. The square in front is public and works as a free viewpoint; the cloister, museum and tower are paid at the entrance. Official page
- Ribeira Square and quayside (7 min walk). Down the Escadas das Verdades and Barredo steps, between old houses with the river in view; the stone steps are steep. Walk along the quay to the Luiz I Bridge, with the Gaia cellars opposite, and pick a terrace for a coffee. From here you can also cross to Gaia on the bridge's lower deck. 30 to 60 min; Free; No ticket. Good to know: A public space. The streets down to the river are narrow, steep and cobbled; by the water the ground is flat. The quay faces south and has little shade on sunny days. Official page

If it rains, swap the Cathedral and the Ribeira for MMIPO on Rua das Flores, 6 minutes from São Bento: it is indoors, opens at 10:00 every day and combines a church and a museum. MMIPO, Porto Misericórdia Museum and Church
