2. The walk

  1. Rua Augusta Arch. This is the starting point, on the north side of Praça do Comércio, at the start of Rua Augusta. Go up to the terrace when it opens at 10:00: you see the square, the river, the Cathedral and the Castle, and get the morning's map in your head. If you finish breakfast before 10:00, start at Ribeira das Naus and leave the Arch for the end. 30 to 45 min; Paid; Tickets online. Good to know: Opens at 10:00 every day. A lift goes up to the second floor, then 74 steps lead to the terrace, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Official page
  2. Ribeira das Naus (6 min walk). Cross the square towards the river and head west along the water to the lawn and the steps. Sit on the steps leading down to the Tagus or walk on towards Cais do Sodré; this is the part of the morning with no ticket and no opening hours. 20 to 45 min; Free; No ticket. Good to know: An open-air public space, flat and in full sun, with a kiosk and outdoor tables. Swimming is not allowed, and the steps down to the water need care with small children. Official page
  3. Money Museum (8 min walk). Head back into the Baixa to Largo de São Julião, two blocks from the square; flat, on cobbles. An hour is enough to see the gold bar and the stretch of medieval wall, and to make a banknote with your own face. From here it is 3 minutes back to Praça do Comércio. 45 to 75 min; Free; No ticket. Good to know: Opens at 10:00, Wednesday to Sunday; closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Entry is through a security gate, and backpacks and large bags go in the lockers. There is a gold bar you can touch and a station that prints a banknote with your face on it. Official page
