Hotel breakfast in Funchal and Madeira without staying

Hotel breakfast in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Porto Santo without staying the night: which hotels, which areas, what is on the table and what it costs.

Madeira wakes up facing the sea. In Funchal the bay fills with light early, there are already people walking along the Lido promenade, and the hotel breakfast rooms open onto the Atlantic. Until now, that morning belonged only to the people sleeping there.

Not any more: Morning Club books breakfast at 7 hotels on Madeira and Porto Santo, with no room, like a restaurant table. This guide covers which hotels they are, which area each one is in, what the breakfast is like, what it costs and how to book.

Where: Funchal by area, the hills and Porto Santo

Four of the hotels are in Funchal, in three different parts of the city. The other two are outside it: one in the hills, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, and one on the island of Porto Santo.

Funchal: the Lido

Two hotels on the seafront promenade, west of the centre.

This is the area if you want to pair breakfast with a walk by the sea.

Funchal: the Sé

Pestana Casino Park is the only building by Oscar Niemeyer in Portugal, opened in the 1970s. It stands next to the cruise port, in Santa Catarina Park, surrounded by gardens and five minutes' walk from the centre of Funchal. The buffet is served at Panorâmico, a room whose windows open onto the Bay of Funchal and the pool.

Funchal: the Marina

Pestana CR7 Funchal is the first hotel of the partnership between Cristiano Ronaldo and the Pestana group, in the centre, by the marina, with the CR7 Museum right next door. Breakfast is a buffet with show cooking at Inverse by CR7, the hotel's sports bar, where visitors and locals sit at the same table.

Câmara de Lobos: Jardim da Serra

BIO Hotel Quinta da Serra swaps the sea for the hills. It is a five-star hotel on a historic estate with century-old gardens, in Jardim da Serra, surrounded by nature and with a view of the valley from the restaurant. The kitchen relies on local ingredients and produce from the hotel's own vegetable garden.

Porto Santo

Legacy Ithos Boutique Hotel is on the neighbouring island, right by the sea, a few steps from Porto Santo's nine-kilometre golden sand beach. It has only 28 rooms. Breakfast is à la carte at ORIGO34, the hotel's restaurant, with a sea view and a menu signed by chefs Manuel Santos and Diogo Rocha, the latter holding a Michelin star.

What the breakfast is like

At the four Funchal hotels it is a buffet. All of them have pastries, fresh fruit, eggs, coffee and tea and natural juices. Pestana Casino Park adds sparkling wine, regional products and show cooking; Pestana Vila Lido adds cheeses, cold cuts and jams, pancakes and hot dishes made to order.

At Quinta da Serra it is also a buffet, with bread and fresh pastries, cheeses and jams, seasonal fruit and yoghurts, coffee, tea and natural juices, and show cooking.

At Legacy Ithos it is à la carte, with the focus on local produce.

All six list vegetarian and gluten-free options. If you have an allergy, write it in the note for the hotel when you book. What each hotel serves, item by item, is on its page.

As for what is typical of the island, the traditional Madeiran breakfast is bolo do caco, and we wrote about it in Portuguese breakfast, region by region.

What you book, and what you don't

What you book is the table and the breakfast, in the same room and at the same standard as the hotel guests. That is the agreement with the hotel.

What is not included is the rest of the hotel: pools, spa, beach or gym. When a hotel sells an experience separately, such as the pool day at Quinta da Serra, it appears on the hotel page as an extra, with its own price.

The table shows when each breakfast room opens and closes and whether the hotel takes same-day bookings. Where it does not, you book by the day before. If you want a quieter room, pick an early time; at weekends and in the holidays, booking a few days ahead helps.

Groups

You book online like any other morning. For larger groups the hotel confirms first, to make sure everyone is seated comfortably.

Parking

Children

The rules are in the last column of the price table: each hotel sets the age up to which children eat free and the age up to which they pay half. You enter the ages when you book and the price adjusts itself.

When it makes sense

When it does not make sense: if you want the cheapest meal possible, a pastelaria will do it for a fraction; and if what you want is the pool or the spa, that does not come with the booking.

How to book

The same as everywhere else in the country. You choose the hotel, the date, the time and the number of people, pay online with instant confirmation and turn up at the time you booked. No room and no check-in. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, with an automatic refund.

All the island's hotels are on the Madeira page. The full mechanics are in the guide to hotel breakfast without staying, and the other destinations in where to have a hotel breakfast in Portugal. To give it as a present, gift vouchers are valid for 12 months at any partner hotel, Madeira included.
