Breakfast with a sea view: hotels in Portugal
Hotels in Portugal where breakfast comes with the sea in front, on Madeira, in Cascais, Estoril and the Algarve, bookable without staying the night.
Some breakfasts are worth it for what lies on the other side of the window. A laid table, hot coffee and the sea right in front of you, with no rush at all. Portugal has hotel breakfast rooms like that, and several can now be booked without staying the night: you book just the breakfast, with no room, like a restaurant table.
This guide brings together the Morning Club partner hotels where the hotel's own listing confirms a sea view at breakfast, in the breakfast room, the restaurant or on the terrace. The hotels, destination by destination
Only hotels whose listing mentions the sea view at breakfast time are included. A seafront hotel whose breakfast room looks onto the gardens is left out, and so are river views: the Douro in Gaia has an article of its own, breakfast with a view of the Douro.
Madeira: Funchal and Porto Santo
Pestana Casino Park is the only building by Oscar Niemeyer in Portugal, next to the cruise port, five minutes' walk from the centre of Funchal and with the sea at its feet. Breakfast is a buffet at Panorâmico, overlooking the Bay of Funchal, in a room whose windows open onto the bay and the pool; there is sparkling wine, regional produce and show cooking. It costs 23 euros per person, and the hours are 07:30–11:00.
Pestana Vila Lido is a five-star hotel in the Lido, perched over the Atlantic, with its own steps down to the sea and its common areas in a 1938 chalet. The buffet is served at Flor do Mar, in the modern building, a room with windows over the ocean and tables outdoors. It costs 23 euros per person, and the hours are 07:30–11:00.
Pestana Promenade, also in the Lido, is a four-star resort two minutes' walk from the beach, with direct access to the seafront promenade that runs to Praia Formosa. The buffet is served at Breezes, the main restaurant, looking over the pool and the sea. It costs 20 euros per person, and the hours are 07:30–11:00.
Pestana CR7 Funchal is in the centre, by the marina and the Atlantic, with the CR7 Museum right next door. The hotel's listing describes breakfast with a sea view, served as a buffet with show cooking at Inverse by CR7, the hotel's sports bar. It costs 20 euros per person, and the hours are 07:30–11:00.
On Porto Santo, Legacy Ithos Boutique Hotel is a five-star hotel with 28 rooms right by the sea, a few steps from the island's nine-kilometre beach. Breakfast is à la carte at ORIGO34, the hotel's restaurant, in a calm setting with a sea view and a menu signed by chefs Manuel Santos and Diogo Rocha, the latter holding a Michelin star. It costs 30 euros per person, and the hours are 07:30–11:00.

Cascais and Estoril
Farol Hotel occupies a late 19th-century mansion on the Santa Marta point in Cascais, extended with a contemporary wing that leans out over the ocean; almost every common area ends in a sea view. Breakfast is served by the water, with a terrace over the rocks and the pool, a few minutes' walk from the centre of Cascais and the marina. It costs 35 euros per person, and the hours are 07:30–10:30.
Estoril Vintage Hotel is a century-old mansion in Monte Estoril, the former Casa de S. Cristóvão, now a 15-room boutique hotel decorated by Graça Viterbo with the glamour of the 1920s, less than a kilometre from Praia das Moitas. The restaurant opens onto the Atlantic Ocean, and breakfast combines a buffet with à la carte dishes, with continental and English options, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices, and sparkling wine. It costs 35 euros per person, and the hours are 08:00–11:00.

Algarve
Wine & Books by the Sea is a five-star seafront resort at Herdade dos Salgados, in Albufeira, with direct access to Praia dos Salgados, three minutes' walk away. Breakfast is a buffet at the resort's restaurant, with pastries baked that day, seasonal fruit and eggs cooked to order, looking over the gardens and the sea. It costs 30 euros per person, and the hours are 07:00–11:30.

Tips for a morning with a view
- Pick the first slot. Right after opening the room is quieter and it is easier to take your time. At the four Pestana hotels in Funchal places are limited in each half-hour slot, so at weekends and in the holidays booking a few days ahead helps.
- Terraces depend on the weather. Where there are tables outdoors, a windy or rainy day can rule them out. Since cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, you can check the forecast before deciding.
- The view belongs to the room, not to every table. The listings confirm the view from the room, the restaurant or the terrace, not from every seat. If a table by the window matters to you, write it in the note for the hotel when you book: it is a request, not a guarantee.
- Add a walk by the sea. Pestana Promenade opens onto the seafront promenade that runs to Praia Formosa, Farol Hotel is a few minutes' walk from the centre of Cascais, Estoril Vintage is less than a kilometre from Praia das Moitas, and Wine & Books by the Sea is three minutes from Praia dos Salgados.
