The table is generated from the database every time the site is updated, so it reflects current prices. If a hotel changes its price or hours, the row changes with it.

What moves the price

Three things, in this order.

• The category and the room. A 4-star in the Baixa charges less than a palace on the Aliados or a room facing the Douro. You pay for the place as much as for the food.
• The format. A full buffet, table service or a short menu of hot dishes cooked to order. Hotels with an egg station, their own bakery and barista coffee tend to sit in the upper half of the table.
• The extras. Some hotels let you add an experience to breakfast, such as spa access. It is optional and paid separately; the price in the table is breakfast only.

What does not move the price: the day of the week. Tuesday and Sunday cost the same. What changes at the weekend is demand, so it pays to book ahead.

Is it worth it without staying the night?

It depends on what you are after.

If you only want a coffee and toast, a neighbourhood café does it for a quarter of the price. Here you are not paying for the cup, you are paying for the morning: a reserved table, a room with light, a full buffet or table service, and all the time you want.

Compared with the price of a room at the same hotel, it is the cheapest way in. A night in a Porto 5-star costs several hundred euros; breakfast, which is often the hotel's best meal, costs 15 to 38 euros.

When breakfast ends

What children pay
